Review Quickie: Blood Kiss by J.R. Ward

After a two year absence from the blogging world, I'm excited to be reviewing squeeing again over the books I'm reading. I hope you've missed me as much as I've missed you! While my reviews won't be as lengthy and involved as they were, I still want to share my thoughts and feelings. Soooooo, without further ado, may I present my very first ....

Blood Kiss
J.R. Ward
Book #1 in Black Dagger Brotherhood Legacy
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated--and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power...on the field, and off.

My Review:

Before I start this review, let me share a confession ... this is the first time I've returned to the BDB world since Qhuinn and Blay's book, Lover At Last. Man, I LOVED that story arc! I'm definitely #TeamQhuinn and once I heard that he wasn't so predominately featured in the books that followed, I kinda stopped reading the series. I know, I know .... bad Bels! In my defense, I was busy writing my own books, but still ... no excuse.

When I saw Warden announce a spin of series that involved new trainees, I squeed a little. When the paperback arrived at my house, I squeed a lot. When I finished it, placing the book gently beside me, I swooned, vowing to correct my oversight and reread the entire series from the beginning again.

Oh, how I've missed this world!

While I didn't get my Q fix, I was happy to return to familiar characters and get introduced to new ones. I enjoyed the split of attention - viewing the world through Paradise's eyes and her being one of two females to survive the brutal introduction to the Brother's training program - and revisiting Marissa and Butch. For me, it was the perfect blend of the old and the new. It didn't take long for me to get swept away, falling in love with Craeg as I waited for the inevitable ... these males, once the fall, they fall HARD. I caught myself chuckling at how valiantly he tried to resist his attraction and the lure of bonding. The Brothers are known to be hard headed when it comes to love, but holy cow ... nothing beats the swoon factor of them being brought to their knees by the females they love.

One of my FAVORITE parts of Blood Kiss was something that happened between V and Marissa. It was the smallest of actions, something some may have quickly read over and thought nothing about, but to me ... it made me smile! For those familiar with the series, Vishous is many things - but affectionate isn't one of them. So when he shows it, I notice. Marissa and Butch deal with relationship issues throughout the book, in the midst of dealing with a horrific death AND starting up a new trainee program. When V says nothing, but kisses Marissa's palm, that one action speaks volumes and showed the level of respect he has for his BFFs shellan. Again, might not mean much to some, but for me, it left me with a goofy grin. Same as when Butch sees his gorgeous mate and instantly drops to his knees. I'm a sucker for those kinds of reactions!

This new spin off has incredible potential and I wait (im)patiently for the next one. I can't wait to see what Warden has in store for the trainees and whose heart we get a glimpse at next! Who knows, maybe the author will have Q come talk to them and I can get my Qhuinn fix. *insert swoon here*

Would I recommend this book? HELL. YES.
