How Book Piracy Hurts The Reader.
I debated about whether I should share this with everyone. It's one of those things where you wonder - do you risk bringing something to the attention of the dishonest, or is it worth it because sometimes the truth helps. I'm hoping its the later.
Money is important. Without it, life can be pretty hard and trust me, I know all about having to make things stretch and sacrificing what I want for things I need. We all like our luxuries. We all like being able to indulge in our hobbies without worrying about bills etc. But at what cost? Do we rob from others so we can get what we want? I don't. I know most don't. Unfortunately, there are some out there who do - whether ignorantly or blatantly.
Point is BOOK PIRACY HAS TO STOP. Plain and simple. Going to free download sites is WRONG. You not only cheat the author but you also cheat yourself. How? Let me explain.
You've no doubt heard the reasoning - when you download books for free instead of honestly buying them, you're robbing the author of their livelihood. You're taking money away from paying rent, buying food, caring for families. You steal hard earned money from authors who worked and sacrificed to bring you the very stories you love. You make it hard for authors to make ends meet. You cheat them and their family. For some, you care and stop. But others? You think it doesn't hurt you, right? You're saving a few bucks. You're getting to read as many books as you want while not having to sacrifice a thing. Ahhhh, but here is where you are WRONG.
Do you have ANY idea how much it costs the author to produce that book you stole? Want to know how much it can cost me?
Pretty covers range from $50 to $400
Edits range from a few hundred dollars to thousands. Yes, THOUSANDS. You also pay proof readers, formaters, and programs to create paperbacks. The author pays this with the hope readers will LOVE the book, tell their friends, and make the money back through royalties.
Want to know how much it costs to market that book you stole?
Book tours range from $50 - $1000
Release day events, promo sites, book trailers, giveaways, swag - we all love winning things - those tshirts, posters, signed copies, trinkets ... they all cost MONEY. Do you know each time I go to the post office it costs me anywhere from $10 to $80?
Want to meet me or your favorite authors? Sure, we LOVE our readers. We don't ask you to come to our homes though. No, we go to conventions, books signings, and reader events. We FLY, we DRIVE, we stay in HOTELS, we eat out, we buy in advance books and SHIP said books, we buy swag to give you and make you smile because we LOVE YOU. We want to make sure you have a great time when we meet you .... our way of saying thank you. Where does this money come from? Yep, you guessed it ... what we earn when honest people buy our books.
Moral of the story: You may not think it matters much when you download that free book. You may even think you have a valid reason but for every dollar that doesn't reach the author ... the author who has WORKED for it and EARNED it, that is one LESS dollar for the next book. One LESS dollar for the fun things that come with being a reader. Ask yourself is it worth it? Truly? EVERYONE suffers.
For those who support authors by buying their books, THANK YOU. You are the reasons why we love our jobs. Why we smile when our characters talk to us and why we work so hard in creating the best possible stories. We love you, love meeting you, love hearing how much you enjoy our books. We also love how staunchly you defend us when book piracy happens.
I'm a realist. For every site we take down, another 5 surface. Book piracy won't stop until each heart realizes that honesty is the best policy and stealing someone's EARNED income is wrong. Let's stop creating a demand for these sites ♥
So ends my rant *winks*
