Guest Post: My Love Of Romance Over The Years by Jackie

First I would like to thank Belinda for having me as a guest on her blog during her Month Of Passion Palooza in February. I found her site last year and fell in love with the absolutely delicious books Belinda loves to read, many of which I also read lot's more that I have not yet gotten to! Plus she has pretty little Chihuahua's too!

While my taste in reading may have changed my love for Romance novels has not, as a matter of fact it has actually come full circle in the last couple of years! In my teens and early 20's did not buy many romance books myself as had an aunt and older cousin who shared the ones they bought and then read with me... My first experience with romance was with author Barbara Cartland, if you have read her you know she is very "tame" compared to what is out there today!

In my 30's and 40's I have discovered my one abiding and true love, Paranormal Romance! Like others before me I had read a few vampire/werewolf books but then when I discovered the wonders of  reading the Vampire Chronicles published from 1976 to 2003 written by Author Anne Rice it was easy to immerse myself in the sensual and dark tales of Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius, Akasha and the rest! Although these books may not be considered conventional romance stories, if you look deeper there are m/m and m/f pairings just not an HEA for the main characters....
Nowadays my favorite authors include some well known and not so well known in the Paranormal, Historical and Contemporary Romance genres...

Nora RobertsJeaniene FrostPaula Quinn and Donna Kauffman all have something that creates "magic" when you read their work.. Roberts not only pens parnormal romance, contemporary romance and even some pretty good thrillers starring Eve and Roarke in the series written by her AKA J.D.Robb... Jeaniene Frost may be best known for her Night Huntress books starring Cat and Bones.. Paula Quinn is my newest "fix" for sexy Highlanders and politically inclined Historical Romance reading, while Donna Kauffman is the one that I go to for my Contemporay fast fun and thrill a minute reads. Kauffman also pens some very, very steamy Highlander stories that are worth checking out!
Thanks for coming by Jackie *smiles*

About Jackie

My Dad's Stallion was born in 1962 a few months before I was, we grew up together and this is one of my favorite pictures of him with me taken before he passed away at the ripe old age of 33... I live in Central Texas after growing up in South Texas... I am a wife, a daughter, a proud pet parent and a voracious reader who loves to cook and do hand crafts when the mood strikes... My pets are my four legged children and include my 12 year old Chihuahua Nikki, my almost 8 year old Tabby cat Munequa and my almost 6 year old Tomcat Blade... My husband, my elderly Mom and I live out in the woods and have all kinds of wild deer, racoons, skunks and other critters come visit... There are many species of pretty wild birds, in the summer we get inundated with the prettiest species of Hummingbirds that you can find anywhere... I just want to thank Belinda again for allowing us to share our love of romance reading and the different authors that are out there in the Genre is amazing! Come visit me sometimes at Housewife Blues and Chihuahua Stories where we can kick back and drink a cold glass of Dr Pepper and chat about some books and you can maybe give me some good reading recommendations...

Known as the "Grand Dame of Romance" Cartland apparently wrote an incredible 723 books and upon her death left behind 160 unpublished manuscripts which are now available as The Barbara Cartland Pink Collection .

Needless to say you did not read these books for the very old fashioned covers, in their time though they were popular!

My next addiction in my 20's was for the Gothic Romance books written by Victoria Holt which was just one of the pseudonyms for Eleanor Alice Burford Hibbert according to Like Barbara Cartland the books I enjoyed were not purchased by me but they were my first taste of the darker side of English Historical Fiction... Again the covers were not what we see today!

Kate said...

Oh, Victoria Holt! Her book, The India Fan, is still one of my favorites. I re-read it at least once a year. I haven't read much paranormal romance, other than the Sookie Stackhouse books, but I never say never to any genre of book!

Good Morning Belinda hope you are having a good Monday!

Kate for me it is best to jump around on the genres and different authors so my reading does not get stale or in a rut... Nowadays we are very lucky and privileged to have so many good reads to choose from... Thanks for stopping by and hope you found some authors new to you today!

Great post, Jackie. Wow, Barbara Cartland was amazing! She must have written in her sleep, lol. There are so many amazing authors these days, it's wonderful to have such a wide selection.
The stallion's gorgeous. He must have been a lot of fun to grow up with!

hi Jackie! great post! my Mom had a huge collection of Barbara Cartland books and i got to read some of them. unfortunately a lot were borrowed and were never returned or got lost over the years. so sad. if i had tons of money, these are some of the books we used to have that i would buy and really take care of. i'm not so sure but we might have a couple of Victoria Holt somewhere. need to check. c",)

jackie b central texas said...

Cate I think you are right that Ms. Cartland must have written in her sleep.. LOL She was a truly prolific author who set the bar high for those who followed in her footsteps...
The Stallion was my "brother" and yes a whole lot of fun to grow up with and ride...

AOB if I had only kept some of the books myself they would be a great collectors item just for the sheer nostalgia factor and the cover art that with rereleasing has changed on Cartlands works...

Thanks to both of you for stopping by today, nice to know there are other lovers of the genre still around and reading it today!

I have to confess I absolutely adore the Vampire Chronicles...I fell in love with Lestat and he's still my favourite book boyfriend! Nora Roberts is another guilty pleasure for me as well...there's something great about romance that sets the heartstrings trembling...

jackie b central texas said...

Mel how do you feel about Armand from Rice's series? For me it is a tie between he and Lestat... Nora Roberts is everyone's guilty pleasure as she has so many wonderful reads it is hard to find an end to her on the bookshelf in a book store!

Thanks for coming over, hope work was good to you today Mel!

I believe my Mom, Grandma and Aunt read Barbara Cartland. I never did though.

My first taste of romance was Danielle Steele then I moved to Cassie Edwards and Madeline Baker as well as Janielle Taylor.

jackie b central texas said...

Oh Donna Madeline Baker was one of my favorites for years, Danielle Steele also until one day could not read her work anymore for some reason...
I have never read anything by Janielle Turner and want to read some books by Cassie Edwards some day...

Happy Monday to you Donna, thanks for the heads up on a couple authors to try...

Melissa (Books and Things) said...

Oh I loved Anne Rice! I also enjoyed the Witches series of hers as well. And what a beautiful horse. Thanks for sharing all of this with us!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

jackie b central texas said...

The Mayfair Witches were interesting Melissa, very much something to recommend for anyone who likes a series to cross over into another like that one and the Vampire Chronicles did..

Thanks for the sweetness to my Dad's Stallion, he was the "real baby of the family" and a very good horse while we had him in good health....

Hope you have a great evening and a wonderful week yourself Melissa, thanks for coming by today... I need to start doing more romance reading soon, did not realize how much I loved it until wrote this post!

Live Out Loud said...

That is a beautiful horse! So cool to grow up together.

Great Post, Jackie! I like those old-fashioned book covers.

I never heard about Barbara Cartland before - wow! Amazing - 'prolific' doesn't even begin to describe her!

jackie b central texas said...

Yes Pretty Boy was a beauty and such a wonderful companion we forgot he was a horse some times... He even tried to come in the house with us and my Dad always thought it was hilarious, Mom not so much!

Cartland was and probably still is one of the most well published authors of Romance, however you not hearing about her does not surprise me as she was someone who many people never read or heard about!

Thanks for stopping by today Jenny, glad you did and hope you are having fun with Ella and her next story!

Melissa (My words and pages) said...

Oh Jackie this is a wonderful post!!! I love all the covers. And these are like classics now. They've been redoing some of the covers on the books. (I think I like the older ones though) But I love the post! Great idea.

jackie b central texas said...

Yes Melissa they are indeed classic covers, saw where they are redoing most if not all of Barbara Cartlands....

Thanks for heading over tonight, have a good one!

Maria Zannini said...

Hi Jackie! I think it's so sweet that you and the horse grew up together. I love learning about you in little bits and pieces.

And thank you for introducing me to a new blog. It's nice to meet you, Belinda!

jackie b central texas said...

It was a cool thing to have a horse be my "Big Brother" at least until I got old enough to understand there would be no little brothers of the human variety Maria... I miss the Stallion though, he was a big old pet!

You are welcome and Belinda likes people to find her blog, glad you could come join in the fun tonight!

B I am off to bed but will check back tomorrow if anyone else stops by...

Natasha said...

You have a great romance list!
I'm happy to say I read many of them, but not too many of the older ones, although I do like the covers. They are funny!

I love you horse! Such a beauty! You must have been great friends. 33 years is a blessing. :)

Great guest post Jackie!

jackie b central texas said...

Natasha the older covers were representations not books that I read by the authors, cannot remember to tell you the truth what all I read by them anymore as has been too many years ago...

Anne Rice of course have read everyone of her books in Mayfair Witches and Vampire Chronicles...

The horse was indeed a "friend", always had a horse or dog or both growing up and it kept me occupied when not in school...

Thanks for stopping by and have a good day today!

Aisle B said...

hey Jackie girl!

Love getting to know more about your love for romance since we both love a certain someone...

PS keeping him tonight but I promise Damon will swoop over before you wake tomorrow :)

jackie b central texas said...

PK I am going to have to watch a rerun or YouTube videos for my fix on you know who as the show is on hiatus until April 7th, damn the network for that!

Thanks for popping by lady, glad to have you get in on the fun and hope you have read some of these authors and their books too!
