Book Blogger Hop #8 / My Week In Review

September 24-27, 2010

Hosted by Jen at Crazy-For-Books

In the spirit of the Twitter Friday Follow, the Book Blogger Hop is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word! This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books! It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs to read! (click the title)

This week's question comes from Elizabeth who blogs at Silver's Reviews.

When you write reviews, do you write them as you are reading or wait until you have read the entire book?

I have a REALLY REALLY bad memory. When I first started writing reviews I'd read the book, having all kinds of insights and observations but when it came time to write the review, I'd have totally forgotten them. It was frustrating as all heck because I really think my insights are important to the kind of review I give. I don't know where I read it, but a blogger shared that they took notes when they read so it could help them remember so I tried it. HUGE difference in my reviews. HUGE. When I'm reading I have my laptop beside me or post it notes or paper and pen. When I get some kind of insight I quickly record it and then keep reading. Sometimes I have alot of insight and sometimes very little. That frees up any pressure to straight away write the review and it especially helps when the book I've just read leaves me literally speechless and it takes a few days to even begin to put something together. So far, this has really helped :)

My week in review

To my extreme amazement, I found that two sites had picked up my reviews and posted them on their web pages. First, http://www.frostfans.com/ used my review of Eternal Kiss Of Darkness and then http://www.ebookreviewsite.com/ picked up my Blood Of The White Witch review. Shocked the heck out of me to see those sites show up in my stats.

Winner of the "Ahoy Landlubber" giveaway

Book Review - Eternal Kiss Of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost
Book Review - My Blood Approve by Amanda Hocking
Book Review - Blood Of The White Witch by Lacey Weatherford
Book Review - Dark Lover by JR Ward
Book Review - Lover Eternal

Also, just as a side question - This week during the "Waiting On Wednesday" meme, I added something extra to mine called "Waiting For Payday" The reason was that with so many books on my TBR or newly discovered, I couldn't buy them all and so I'm always saying "Well I'll get this on my next payday" Some people commented on how it should be a meme and they'd be part of it. So I'm curious to whether there was anyone else who thinks it would be something they'd be part of? I'm thinking it would be a Thursday meme because don't most people get paid on a Friday? Any feed back would be great :)

Hello, Happy Hopping.

You stop by my blog so often and I find myself at your blog often... I never realized I wasn't a follower.

Needless to say, I'm now a follower :)

I wait tell the book is completely finished before I start ranting and raving about it.

I usually have to reread the book somewhat when doing a review. I tend to forget things, but I consider it the sign of a bad book if I've completely forgotten the plot within two days of reading it (and that's happened a few times lately).
My Hop

Hey! I'm dropping by from the hop and already a follower.

That's a pretty good idea about jotting down some notes while reading. Sometimes, I'll think of something I want to say later in my review, but once I'm finished reading the book, I can't remember what I was going to say! lol. I can only hope that what I end up going with is better than what I had originally thought...

Hope you have a great weekend! :)

Hopping back! I think I probably forget key things sometimes, I really should note down a few more things when I'm reading. But when I start writing the review, often it goes in a completely different direction to what I expected, because I had no plans and I like that.
Happy Friday!

I think I might have to try with the taking notes while reading and see if that makes a difference in my reviews too.

Very cool on getting your reviews picked up by those sites too :D

You know I was actually looking at your Waiting on Payday thing, and was thinking that I have a lot of books like that as well. I'd participate in it.

Thanks for stopping by. I definitely have to tag and take notes of the quotes, so I have to read very carefully myself.

I would think it would be too much of a distraction to take notes while reading.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. :)

I take notes and use post-its while reading as well. Sometimes most of my review is done by the time I finish reading and other times I just have to wait for it to come to me...
have a great weekend!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I look forward to reading your reviews.

I don't take notes, but do the review right after I read it so I can flip through it and find exactly what I want. I still haven't found my groove for my reviews.

How did you look to see who used your reviews? I think that's awesome! Maybe you won't have to wait for payday, maybe they'll start paying you, but is it okay that they used your reviews without asking? Just want to know the etiquette on that.

Thanks for hopping by my blog! A lot of people tend to take notes while they are reading-- especially if they are planning on review the material. I don't usually unless there is a certain passage I want to quote. Have an awesome weekend!

I wait until I read the whole thing. Maybe I need to take notes like you so I can write better! :) Congrats on being showcased!! That is wonderful!

Oh, and I'm a new follower!

I bet taking notes is really helpful when it comes time to review, but I just cannot bring myself to do it. I'd rather make more work for myself and be able to get lost in the book, than not. I hope you have a great weekend!!

I take notes too, but much more sporadically than you do I think. I don't always have a writing utensil or my computer around while I'm reading. Maybe I have a better memory as well, which helps.

Sometimes I find that while I'm writing the review itself, I'll have a new insight into the book...just like that. (Years of writing English lit essays might help explain this fact.)

thanks for the hop... I never understand people who write before they finish a book... notes yeah... but to review without the whole picture ... not sure how well that would work :)

Hello Belinda -- I'm stopping by as I hop from blog to blog following the Book Blogger Hop this weekend. I see that you are reading Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H. P. Mallory. I just picked this one up as a freebie for my Kindle and I'm looking forward to reading it. If it's as good as the cover, it should be outstanding.

Hoppity Hop!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I like "Waiting for payday". But today my Christmas and the other one (Easter?) came together on one day as I held a bookswap and got 10 lovely books. I got rid of 20 books that I didn't want anymore, so all in a good swap.

Thank you for stopping by my blog! I should be taking notes. I know I forget things but I also read at such random times and places that having something near by the take notes on isn't always easy. I do highlight sections when I read on my kindle of things that struck me.
